Foot Patrol with Lt. Velez

Becuase the 08-09 budget was constructed with the assumption of $4-0r-higher gasoline prices, the Oviedo Police Department has stepped up the number of foot patrols for its officers. Lt. Tony Velez, seen here, often patrols the shopping area near City Hall.

Velez said communication with local business owners goes a long way toward insuring the effectiveness of the OPD's foot patrols. He and Marianne North, owner of The Used Furniture Menagerie, located on Alafaya Trail and Alexandria Boulevard, have a good relationship specifically because of frequent communication. North said having police officers around is not only better for business, it also makes her feel safer when working alone.
